Understanding Industrial Insulation: What We Use & Why It Matters

At Technotherm Ltd, we specialise in high-quality industrial insulation solutions for clients across Northern and Southern Ireland—serving a range of sectors including food processing, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, and manufacturing. One of the most common questions we get asked is:

What type of insulation do you use, and why?

The industries we work with—like meat processing plants, cold storage facilities, and pharmaceutical manufacturers—require reliable insulation that can withstand demanding conditions. Our materials are chosen not just for their thermal efficiency, but for their resilience in harsh, high-traffic, and temperature-sensitive environments.

Whether it’s extreme cold, high humidity, or heavy cleaning routines, the insulation systems we install are built to perform and last. And because we handle both fabrication and installation, we maintain quality control from start to finish.

So, we thought we’d break it down in this post.

Understanding the Cold Chain Industry in Ireland

In both Northern and Southern Ireland, the cold chain and temperature-controlled industries are vital to the economy—particularly in food processing, agriculture, pharmaceutical, and logistics sectors. Maintaining consistent temperatures isn’t just about compliance; it’s about ensuring product integrity, safety, and operational efficiency. That’s where specialist industrial insulation comes in. At Technotherm, we work closely with businesses across the island to provide insulation systems that support these high-performance demands, reduce energy usage, and help meet increasingly strict sustainability targets.

#1: What Kind of Insulation Do We Use?

We primarily use polyurethane foam (PUF) for our cold work and foil-faced mineral wool for hot pipework insulation. Both materials are carefully selected based on their specific performance in high- and low-temperature environments.

1. Polyurethane Foam (PUF)

  • Ideal for cold and refrigeration insulation

  • Excellent thermal performance (low thermal conductivity)

  • Seamless application, reducing thermal bridging

  • Durable, long-lasting, and resistant to moisture. We typically apply PUF between pre-cut metal cladding, foam-injecting directly around the pipe or vessel to ensure full coverage and maximum insulation value.

2. Foil-Faced Mineral Wool

  • Perfect for high-temperature applications like boiler pipework or steam systems

  • Fire-resistant and non-combustible

  • Great for areas where safety and heat retention are critical. We often finish these installations with aluminium cladding to provide added durability—especially in areas with heavy foot traffic or outdoor exposure.

#2: Why This Matters for Your Business

Whether you operate in a beef processing plant in County Monaghan or a pharmaceutical facility in Belfast, the right insulation can:

Reduce energy waste

Improve operational efficiency

Maintain precise temperature control

Extend the lifespan of your equipment

Support sustainability and compliance goals

In short, insulation isn't just a box-ticking exercise—it's an investment in the long-term efficiency and reliability of your operations.

#3: How Our Installation Process Sets Us Apart

At Technotherm, we don’t just supply high-quality insulation materials—we take pride in how they’re installed. Every project we take on across Northern and Southern Ireland is managed by our experienced team, who follow strict procedures to ensure precision and consistency.

Whether it's polyurethane foam injection or mineral wool insulation, our technicians are trained to meet exacting standards. We also carry out thermal imaging surveys and performance checks to confirm every system is working as efficiently as it should. This hands-on, tailored approach ensures long-term value and peace of mind for our clients.

Did You Know?

Even a 1°C loss in temperature over long pipe runs can lead to significant energy costs over time.

That’s why choosing the right insulation method and material from the start is so important—and why we always tailor our approach to each job, big or small.
